TOWN OF SMYRNA ELECTRIC CUSTOMERS – SCAM ALERT
RESIDENTS ADVISED THEY MUST GO SOLAR
May 17, 2021
Smyrna, DE – Several Town of Smyrna electric customers have received unsolicited calls or home visits where salespeople are providing false information about Delaware state law, electric costs, and utility services. Town of Smyrna electric customers are being told that everyone must go solar. To be clear, Delaware state law does not mandate electric customers to switch to solar energy. Please be advised, there is also no law requiring the disconnect of electric service if the homeowner does not install their own rooftop solar. Whatever you choose, please be fully informed before making a long-term commitment.
If you encounter pressured sales using fear of costs going up and services being cancelled, please be diligent. Double check with the Town Planning and Inspections Department to see whether a company is licensed and permitted to do work in the Town of Smyrna. Also, if you feel uneasy and pressured, the Town requires licenses for solicitors, and you can report unwelcomed home solicitation to the Smyrna Police Department. As in all areas, be diligent not to share personal identifying information, like account numbers and social security numbers, with someone who shows up at your door.
Please call the Town of Smyrna at (302) 653-9231 with any questions relating to your electric or other utility services, especially BEFORE providing your information to another company, salesperson, or signing a contract.
