Protecting Our Pets

Our pets are a part of our lives; they comfort, enrich, and give us more than we can ever give back. We must do our part to protect them in a time of need. Prepare now to protect your animal family members when an emergency or disaster strikes.

Delaware has taken steps to assist pet owners in preparing for, responding during, and recovery efforts following a disaster.  In 2008, Delaware Animal Response, a section of the Delaware Department of Agriculture, was created and is working to make Delaware a more prepared state for pets.

In the event of a disaster or emergency, you may need to evacuate your home.  Having a place already set up for the relocation of your animals is critical.  History has proved that leaving your animals behind, even if you think you have made a safe place for them, is not the answer.  They are likely to get lost, injured, or worse.  Some shelters and hotels do not accept pets, so prepare now for the time you may have to leave.
